ideas in isolation...

I've started making these boxes, Peepshows if you like. There's a little world inside them.
Here's a bad picture of the first one. I have plans in my head for at least three more, but the current lockdown means I'll have to wait as there is no access to lasercutters, CNC machines or similar.
So I have been trying to think myself out of this situation. I could buy in the service - assuming they are still operating (expensive) or I could buy the machine (even more expensive, can't justify it at the moment) so another idea is needed.
That idea is to get out the red/cyan glasses and try them in 3D. Watch this space...

Isolation

'Isolation" a quick painting since we're all in that boat. This is a detail, actual size is 300mm x 300mm. Acrylic on paper. Colours are Pithalo blue and gold. I like gold paint, makes things glow and light up. Doesn't behave nicely on screen or as a print - which is why you have to see them live.

Stations of the Cross

So, last week we had to look at some writing, and make a critical evaluation. For the second time, I discovered what I already knew, which was that religion (any) and contemporary art don't mix. Which was co-incidental since I saw a small illuminated sculpture that inspired me to think about journeys and that led to the stations of the cross.
Stations of the Cross is a traditional telling of the journey of Jesus from the garden to resurrection. I liked the idea of little sculptures with streets inside them that would record that journey - as if on a history walk or something similar.
The image below is a partially worked first go. I'm not sure if I will carry on, use a different story - this one is hard to tell without people or other signifiers - or just move on.

15 boxes, each with a little street scene inside.

Here's the finished drawing:

This was to be a ceramic sculpture illustrating the stations of the cross, the ceramics were to be little sculptures of street scenes, but without people. I had seen another ceramic which seemed to achieve what I was hoping for.  However, during a HACS session on spirituality and art I discovered that it has been done before and was not considered effective. Reflecting on this, I attempted the drawing above, but realise the criticism would still be partially valid, so the practical side was abandoned.

Here's the ceramic, picture doesn't quite read - but it looks like a long corridor with stairs at the end. Very clever! Sorry, couldn't find out who made it.

About this blog.

Been around for a long time. Originally set up to post odd things - then as a resource for students. Decided to move things over to a Wordpress site last year, never got completed. Now need a blog for University. So at the moment, I've revised this. But I *may* still move over to the Wordpress site. That will be one of the choices this week or next, but for the moment it's here...

The virus makes us stay indoors.

So here I am two weeks into the Corona virus isolation. Probably I'm in the danger group since I'm old, diabetic and have reduced immune system. At the moment I haven't heard anything from the official line - so maybe they don't think the same. Anyway, going to be here for some time.
Here's some pictures of setting up studio at home:
